Mission:

The Toxics/Pesticides Subcommittee works under the auspices of the Materials Committee to monitor toxic activity in Acton and to promote constructive alternatives. The subcommittee covers the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other toxic substances on private and public property.

The subcommittee researches issues, educates the public, and engages with the Town of Acton by attending relevant public meetings and sometimes proposing changes in Town policies and activities. It reaches out to Acton residents through publishing articles, appearing at farmers markets and other public events and venues, and making information accessible to people through local businesses.

Get Involved:

The Toxics/Pesticides Subcommittee meets monthly along with the rest of the Materials Committee. Meetings take place by Zoom or face-to-face, generally on the first Monday of the month. (Double check the Green Acton calendar, however.) We welcome new participants! For answers to questions or to join our email discussion group, please contact us here.

Accomplishments:

  • The subcommittee was formed in 2021. The focus so far has been on consumer education through various media.
  • In March 2023, we were proud to sponsor nationally known sustainable lawn and turf educator Chip Osborne, who presented a webinar on creating beautiful and sustainable lawns (https://bit.ly/45qUpbu).
  • Our articles (published on the Green Acton website) have covered how to create a lush, healthy lawn without synthetic chemicals (https://bit.ly/3QVKBC5), and how to test your lawn to properly fertilize it (https://bit.ly/3OXFsGN).
