Green Acton conducts its work via multiple committees of member volunteers. These committees address myriad issues and challenges that our local environment faces. Please learn more about the work of these groups at the linked pages (by clicking on committee name), where you can also contact Green Acton with your interest in any of them.

Mission: In the context of the Climate Emergency, the Energy Committee researches, educates, and collaborates on, and advocates for, the rapid and equitable transition to a renewably powered future at the local level (and at the regional, state, and national levels, when useful). The committee may focus on such issues as energy generation, distribution, storage, and use across sectors. The committee’s work may address, for example, energy conservation and efficiency, electrification in the building and transportation sectors, advancing renewable generation and distribution, the need for grid modernization, and other energy-related matters.

Mission: The Land Use Committee reviews local land use activity, proposes solutions to identified concerns or problems, and advocates for them as land use in Acton relates to the Town’s many environmental emergencies: climate, biodiversity, water, toxins, population, and social justice.

Mission: The Materials Committee monitors material goods in Acton to reduce the use of hazardous substances, promote recycling of materials, and encourage alternative, more environmentally friendly products, production methods, and activities. The Committee engages with residents, representatives of town government, and businesses on these issues. The Materials Committee includes the Plastics Subcommittee and the Toxics/Pesticides Subcommittee, which work in their respective domains.

Mission: The Plastics Subcommittee works under the auspices of the Materials Committee to reduce the use of unnecessary and (especially) single-use plastics in the Town of Acton. The subcommittee researches plastics issues, educates the public about them, and advocates for reductions in plastics use, sometimes including work to change Town bylaws, policies, and/or activities.

Mission: The Toxics/Pesticides Subcommittee works under the auspices of the Materials Committee to monitor toxic activity in Acton and to promote constructive alternatives. The subcommittee covers the use of pesticides, herbicides, and other toxic substances on private and public property. The subcommittee researches issues, educates the public, and engages with the Town of Acton by attending relevant public meetings and sometimes proposing changes in Town policies and activities. It reaches out to Acton residents through publishing articles, appearing at farmers markets and other public events and venues, and making information accessible to people through local businesses.

Mission: The Water Committee works to protect and improve Acton’s ground, surface, and drinking water through information gathering, public education, advocacy, and collaboration with other concerned groups.
