At the December 11, 2018, Green Acton meeting, this statement on the new school building location was agreed to:
Green Acton advocates for a sustainable Acton and region, and we applaud the School Building Committee in stating at the last public meeting that sustainability is a chief goal of this project. To that end, we understand that concerns have been expressed in regard to at least one proposed site, in regard to both safety and environmental risks as the result of possible flooding. Green Acton urges the School Committee to take these risks seriously and consider all options including alternative sites that pose less of a risk in the long term, keeping in mind that the Town of Acton defines sustainability (according to its policy) as “allowing the needs of the present to be met in ways that don’t eclipse the needs of future generations”. Thank you for your consideration in taking the matter of flooding risks extremely seriously.
This statement was emailed and read to the School Building Committee in December. After some unexpected delays to respond to new questions from the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MassSchoolBuildings.org), the schools are expected to have a decision by January 10. Green Acton members and supporters are encouraged to express their views on this matter at the AB School Building Subcommittee meeting on Wed. Jan 9th at 7:00 p.m. and at the AB School Committee Meeting on Thur. Jan 10th at 7:00 pm. Both meetings will take place at the R.J. Grey Junior High School Library.
